[Tucker dumps the things out of his bag onto the counter, then goes for the oil.]

She sure did, but don't feel bad, because she can't cook for shit, either. Lucky for you guys I'm not busy, huh?

Fuck off.

[Kyna swats at Tucker's arm.]

I can cook. You just don't deserve it. Ever.

[hardwearing]

[ Wash leans against the counter, watching them. ]

She's cooked for me. It was definitely better than anything I've made.

[Tucker continues rooting around in Wash's cabinets until he comes up with a bowl, too.]

Yeah, okay, if you can cook then I'm gonna stop letting you mooch off me all the time. Where're those knives at?

[evocation]

Hey, my ribs are broken. I'm like... suffering and shit.

[And now Wash gets to witness just how obnoxious Kyna is with Tucker. She shoots Wash a conspiratorial smile over her shoulder.]

Tell him he should totally be cooking for me, Wash.

[hardwearing]

[ He reaches over and pulls open the drawer with the knives, then looks a bit like a deer in headlights when asked to take a side. ]

Uh. I mean, someone should feed you something decent.

[nowherewolf]

[Tucker grabs one of the larger, sharper-looking knives and points it at Kyna, mock-threateningly.]

Don't make him pick sides. And why the hell do you think I'm here? You think I'm gonna make all this food and then make you watch me eat it?

[He picks up the bag of chips, one-handed, and tosses them at her.]

Appetizer.

[evocation]

[Kyna sticks her tongue out at Tucker oh-so maturely, and then, because her dex score is trash, almost fumbles the bag of chips. Don't you dare say anything, Tucker.]

Thanks.

[And then she sidles back over to Wash, bumping her hip into his.]

Sorry. I was just kidding.

[hardwearing]

[ Kyna bumps against him and Wash's eyes dart to Tucker to see if he noticed -- if he disapproves in any way, before he makes any move to touch her back. He's still fully expecting to get a shovel talk from either Tucker or Harlan at some point. ]

It's fine.

What are you making, Tucker?

[Tucker notices- there's not a lot he doesn't notice. But he doesn't say anything, and he doesn't make a face. Instead he busies himself putting the pan on the stove, putting the oil in the pan, and starting to chop up the eggplant.]

A surprise. Wait. Do you even have Italy where you're from? I lose track of all the different worlds and shit.

[evocation]

[Kyna knows that Tucker is going to notice, and she mentally prepares for him to give her some shit about Wash being her boyfriend later, because Tucker is the worst.]

Uh... He's from like, future Earth. Except he wasn't actually born on Earth. But Earth's a thing.

[hardwearing]

[ Only when Tucker doesn't react does Wash shift, slipping an arm around Kyna to keep her against his side. It's sort of nerve-wracking, being in contact when there's someone around to see. ]

I was born on an outer colony world. But yeah, there's still Italy back on Earth. And we had Italian on Minab -- as close as we could get, anyway.

So you're like, from space?

[Alright fine, that's kind of cool.]

Have you been to Earth? Also is this a magic-having world, or nah?

[Because that will go a long way to establish any similarities.

Tucker tries to keep his posture neutral. He doesn't actually care if Wash and Kyna are touching each other, but he wants to make sure that comes across. He makes quick work of the eggplant, dumps the flour in the bowl, and starts breading the slices before tossing them into the pan.]

[It's fine, Wash. Totally chill. Kyna seems to think so, anyway.]

He was still born on a planet, you dork. That's like saying we're from space.

[hardwearing]

[ Wash grins a little at Kyna's comment, watching Tucker cook. ]

I've traveled in space plenty, but never to the Sol system. No Earth for me. And we definitely don't have magic -- just a lot of alien technology that we don't understand yet.

[nowherewolf]

Wow, okay, excuse me for not psychically knowing that.

[He throws Kyna a look, but not a very serious one.]

Isn't technology you don't understand pretty much the same thing as magic? Might as well be, right?

[And now the eggplant has to fry for a bit, so Tucker flips around to face them, still leaning back against the counter.]

[She scoffs.]

Says the dude who doesn't know shit about magic.

[hardwearing]

Well, there's some stuff we have been able to reverse engineer or activate. From what I've seen of magic here it's more... intangible.

[nowherewolf]

I don't need magic, K. I've got skill.

[Said without even the slightest hint of shame. Maybe a little irony, though.]

And I've tricked plenty of people into thinking I do know magic, so again: what's the difference?

Magic is kind of intangible, yeah, but I don't know, there's ways to measure it and shit. And people discover ancient spells sometimes.

[evocation]

Oh my God, you are such a jackass. [And then, in a terrible imitation of his voice:] "Sure Kyna, I'll take your magical Elven stealth cloak, but I don't actually need it because I'm skilled."

[hardwearing]

[ Okay this sounds fake now. ]

How have you tricked people into thinking you have magic?

[nowherewolf]

I mean the magic helps, but- [He shrugs. And then Wash asks a fantastic question. Tucker claps his hands together.]

I'm glad you asked. Got any small objects handy?

[evocation]

[Kyna makes a face, but she's a good best friend, so she stays quiet.]

[hardwearing]

Does it matter what?

[ He twists to reach into the cupboard behind him, where he's got some batteries stashed. Will these work? ]

[nowherewolf]

Nope, doesn't matter. Just as long as it's smallish.

[He eyes the batteries. Those'll work.]

Put a few of 'em on the counter, if you will.

[He moves slightly aside.]
